Compaq sets up separate SAN business unit

By Tony Hallett

Published: 8 February 2000 11:15 GMT

Compaq has intensified its focus on storage area networks (SANs) and storage management software, unveiling its Open SAN initiative and setting up a separate business unit for the technology.

Compaq's latest storage software, which will branded SANworks, is intended to help users manage storage and servers from a wide range of vendors within a single SAN; SANs provide high-speed access to distributed storage via fibre channel technology.

The computing giant is also investing in the Storage Networking Technology Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The facility will be run by the vendor-neutral Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), and aims to further develop SAN interoperability.
