The trend in software storage is towards a mixture of backup, restore, archive and hierarchical storage management (HSM) tools that support heterogeneous platforms.
According to the report, the HSM segment's revenue is expected to more than double, from $2.5bn in 1999 to $5.6bn in 2004.
Storage resource management (SRM) tools will be one of the leading segments in terms of growth and importance. IDC claims SRM's 2004 compound annual growth rate will be almost 22 per cent. The overall market average is 16 per cent.
