Brocade, a manufacturer of switches for SANs, has reported lower profits and revenues on last year but has still managed to beat analyst expectations.

The company reported a pro-forma net profit of $10.9m for Q4 2001, compared to $27.2m in the same period last year.

This pattern is set to continue into this quarter. Revenues are expected to be in the region of $116m to $120m, more of less flat on the fourth quarter figure of $116.5m.

The company blamed the current economic climate for its performance.

The wider SAN industry is currently locked in a split over the underlying connecting technology. Fibre channel is the current favourite but faces up and coming competition from IP.
