Japanese chip maker Hitachi is planning to cut another 4,000 jobs by June 2002 in an effort to stem mounting losses.

The company said it expects to make a $1.7bn loss for the fiscal year ending in March.

Over 16,000 jobs have already been axed in the past year.

The latest round of job cuts bring total redundancies to six per cent of its workforce.
