Disks are in, tape is out...

Storage specialist Quantum has released a line of products it claims will revolutionise fail-safe back-up systems by putting data onto disks, not tape.
The firm claims its product, called the DX30, is the first of its kind in the market.
Richard Collins, managing director for Quantum EMEA, said the new product was all about reducing the time it took to access back-up data.
He said: "More and more companies are having to back-up at high speed. If you are an online bank you can't afford to spend eight hours backing up the day's data. This product will do it in a few minutes."
By changing the architecture of how the data is stored, the company said it could deliver storage at a quarter of the price of traditional RAID storage. The cost of disk storage has in the past limited its use for applications like back-up.
