EMC has made top spot its own in the storage software sector according to a study from Gartner.

The study found the storage giant grew its worldwide market share to 30.4 per cent in 2001, while its nearest rival, Veritas Software, totalled 19.8 per cent.

Gartner said while disk array growth was slow in 2001, the storage software market continued to perform well as companies looked to make the most of their storage hardware. Worldwide storage software revenue reached $4.9bn in 2001, which represented a three per cent increase over the previous year.

Gartner said it had excluded disk array software from the report. The company said if array-based products were included, Veritas would be in the lead, IBM in second place and EMC would be in third place.
