IBM will today re-launch its top-end Shark storage system in an attempt to revitalise its position in the global storage market.

Big Blue originally launched Shark in 2000 but faced stiff opposition from rivals EMC and Hitachi, and an economy going into freefall following the bursting of the dot-com bubble.

The revamped Shark is the first major upgrade to the system, which is used for high-volume transaction processing, since its introduction in 2001.

The entry-level price on the new machine remains about $400,000.

IBM will start shipping the systems on 16 August.
