Veritas makes $59m utility computing acquisition

Veritas has bought Ejasent, a supplier of application virtualisation software, for $59m in cash.

The storage software giant intends the core UpScale product from Ejasent, also headquartered in Mountain View, California, to help it in its utility computing drive.

UpScale helps IT departments move an application from one server to another without affecting its use. It is particularly useful for upgrades and application maintenance.

Utility computing is a relatively new approach to handling IT and the ability to access an application from almost anywhere - regardless of where an end user is or where the application or data resides - is at its heart.

UpScale runs on Sun’s Solaris Unix operating system with a Linux version set for release in 2005.

The transaction, expected to be completed before the end of this month, will see Ejasent become part of Veritas’ High Availability/Clustering group.
