You incorrectly state: "The tags can only be read at short distances, so it's unlikely that Enemy of the State-style tracking is on the way yet"

At a recent DefCon in Las Vegas, "hackers" were able to read a PASSIVE RFID tag from 250 feet!!! using very rudimentary equipment.

Don't be fooled into thinking that [any] RFID tags are benign. In the "wrong" hands they could easily be used to wreck your life! Embedded in a Passport and/or Credit Card/s it's a bit like shouting out everywhere you go your full personal details...... Lead Lined Wallets anyone?
