EMC to boost Win2000 reliability for Microsoft

EMC, Data General and Microsoft have entered into an alliance aimed at increasing the reliability of the Windows 2000 Server operating system in enterprise environments.

Deborah Willingham, VP of Windows Marketing at Microsoft, said that whereas three years ago CIOs at large companies valued scalability most highly, now the biggest issue is reliability. The latest alliance is an attempt to address that issue with the software giant's new OS.

EMC, known for its high-end storage solutions, said its products will be a "key enabling technology" for Windows 2000. It will be a Global Launch Partner for the operating system at more than 60 locations worldwide.

Bob Dutkowsky, Data General president, called Windows 2000 the ideal platform for the EMC subsidiary, which is now touting a model of computing that stresses consolidation and simplification of resources.

Data General also has had a healthcare alliance with Microsoft that goes back almost 18 months.
